Salamanca

We have arrived in Salamanca. The walk from San Pedro was great, through stunning countryside with wheat and barley in a state of bright green contrasting with the red soil around here. Rain was threatening but we left late enough after enough coffees to get the best of the day. It was cool and cloudy to start with, lots of mud, but we came through a gate after about 8km and could see Salamanca in the distance. On top of the hill there is information about the Battle of Salamanca. Apparently Wellington stood at this spot in 1812 and ordered Pakenham to attack Marmont, and ended up in the first French defeat since 1792. Apparently the French couldn´t see Pakenham, which is understandable. All through this walk you see a town way in the distance, then as you get closer it disappears in a hollow. It took a long time to walk into Salamanca, the suburbs have spread out.
There is a festival on in Salamanca today (Monday) http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunes_de_aguas
It is in Spanish but I am sure you can get the gist. Anyway, the people are queueing for cake.
Salamanca is a beautiful city with a big old university, lots of big old churches and a very impressive Plaza Mayor. Walk across to the market behind to get a much cheaper coffee and tortilla.
